Season Set to Begin for Vandals Baseball Team

Wait till next year! The cry of many a baseball fan when the last season ended without what they had hoped for most, and so it is with the Eureka Vandals this year.

The team was 12-6, 4-4 last year and did not make the playoffs.

This year, second year coach Kia Davis expects to do better.

Returning starters include Bryson Wells (Sr. SS/P), Gage Hayward (Soph. CF/P), Shane Lacovara (Sr. P/3B) and Mikey Lacovara (Jr. Util/ infield).

Senior C.W. Landry, the football quarterback, and who had to sit out much of the basketball season with a severely sprained ankle, is likely to be playing left field.

Davis said the team and the league as well is “going to be riding on pitching. Most teams are solid in the infield and at the plate, and it’s going a bit a matter of who can hit the strike zone consistently. No one team, I think, is a standout over the others. We lost three senior pitchers last year in Colton Anderson, Gavin Denshire and Josh Garcia.”

He noted this season Wells returns two good pitchers (Zane Rodriguez and Sergio Soriano), but both are coming off ACL injuries suffered during basketball.

The Vandals were in the hunt for a playoff spot as the season wound down, but two losses to Carlin and Wells ended their chances.

“Mineral County graduated their two main pitchers last year,” Davis said, “so I don’t know what they have. Carlin has one who will likely be their team leader.

All-in-all this season, it’s all going to come down to who can get the ball across the plate.”

Eureka baseball gets underway this weekend as the boys participate in the Yerington Invitational.

Next week, March 16-17, they travel to Alamo for the Pahranagat Valley tournament.

The Vandals have won the 1A state championship twice, although it has been a while, 1994 and 1997.
