Three Vandals medal at state

Closing out the wrestling season for the Eureka Vandals, sophomore Wyatt Anderson earned a silver medal at the 2A state tournament last weekend in Winnemucca.

The Vandals scored 38 points and finished eighth in the team standings.

Pershing County won its first state wrestling championship and stopped Battle Mountain’s run of six straight state titles.

The Mustangs beat the Longhorns 209-173½. Yerington was third with 154½ points, followed by Pahranagat Valley (68) and Tonopah (64½).

Anderson (138) had his first match of the tournament with Kevin Lemire (Laughlin) and won by fall. In the semifinals he pinned Enrique Aguilar (Wells) at the end of the third period. But he lost the championship to defending champion Dante Reviglio (Yerington), losing on points 16-1.

Reviglio had been the champion last year at 132 pounds.

Also for the Vandals, James “Quade” Flippini and Chris Drayton took fourth place.

Flippini (126) lost his opening round match by fall to Jordon Free (Lincoln County). Then won two matches in the consolation rounds, by fall over Jabez Blanche (Spring Mountain) and a 7-6 decision over Colton Wanner (Pershing County). But he lost by fall to Logan Calvin (Yerington) in the third place match.

Chris Drayton (160) pinned Vance Kinsey-Day (Tonopah) in his first match, lost in the semifinals by fall to Daegan McClary (Battle Mountain), took a consolation semifinal win by fall over Vince Davis (Yerington), then had to face Day from Tonopah again for third place and this time lost to Day by fall in the third period.

Ivan Pickard (132) lost both his matches at state by fall. First to Austen Marshall (Lincoln County), then to Matthew Erbeck (West Wendover).

Preston Hubbard (152) was 1-2 at state for the Vandals, losing first by technical fall to eventual state champion Eric Pickens (White Pine), winning his consolation round match on a 9-4 decision over Bridger Poulsen (Lincoln County), but losing in the consolation semifinals by fall to Sean Gottschalk (Pershing County).
