The Eureka High School football team ran away with a 42-12 victory over Pyramid Lake in Eureka, Friday, Oct. 10. The Vandals are getting healthy at the right time, as two regular-season games remain, both on the road.
“It was a good win for us. We needed it to stay in the playoff hunt,” said head coach Fred Minoletti. “We’re finally starting to click a little better offensively now that we have players back.”
The Vandals forced four turnovers on defense to overcome their own turnovers and special teams struggles. One of the Lakers’ two touchdowns came on a kick return, so the Eureka defense was even better than the score would indicate.
“We played very well defensively and forced four turnovers. Unfortunately, on the flip side, we turned it over a couple of times and gave up some big plays on special teams,” Minoletti said. “We have a bye this week and look forward to focusing on fundamentals in all aspects of the game.”
The Vandals (3-4, 3-2) will visit Virginia City (3-2, 2-2) at 7 p.m. on Oct. 25. Eureka is fourth in the 1A Northern eight-player league, with Virginia City on their heels in fifth, so the winner of this game will likely clinch the final playoff spot for the 1A State Championship.
