The Eureka High School girls volleyball team won the 1A East championship with an undefeated season in league play and a 27-5 record overall last year. The Vandals won a four-set match over Liberty Baptist to advance to the 1A State Semifinals before falling to the eventual runners-up from Smith Valley.
This season’s team is very young, however. Two seniors graduated and two replaced them but at different positions. Middle hitter Julia Minoletti and middle blocker Selene Contreras lead a team along with four juniors, including outside hitter Brooke Watts and libero Jazmine Martinez.
Four sophomores round out the roster, with Anna McKay stepping into the setter’s role vacated by Natalie Gray graduating.
The Vandals are still getting settled into their roles, starting the season 1-6, with their lone victory coming against Oasis Academy. They did take the first set from Round Mountain on Friday before the Knights rolled through sets two and three before squeaking out a 27-25 victory in set four.
The Vandals hosted Carlin (0-4, 0-2) at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, to open league play. The team hosts Lund on Sept. 18 and Spring Creek the following day. Two away trips follow, at McDermitt on Sept. 20 and Wells on the 27th. Home games follow on Oct. 3 and 4 against Owyhee and Round Mountain.
