Eureka’s Zachary Garcia just misses with the tag at third base during a recent game. Eureka is off this week after falling to Mineral County but plays host to Round Mountain April 10 and Pyramid Lake April 13.

Going into Spring break, the Eureka baseball team dropped a double-header affair to Mineral County in Hawthorne.

Despite a 5-run deficit in the fourth inning of the first game, the boys scratched back, climbed the hill and over the top, took the lead, only to see it fall away in their final at bat for Mineral County, and lost 15-14.

The Vandal bats came alive beginning in the fifth inning and following to score 13 runs.

A passed ball to Mikel Lacovara in the fifth started it off. A single by Dalton Lopez, a walk to Shane Lacovara and Chris Dolan’s single helped score five runs that inning.

In the sixth the hot bats continued, singles by Gage Hayward, Carlin Hooper, Lopez, a walk to Wyatt Anderson and a Mineral County error helped Eureka score seven runs and lead the game 13-10. Another run in the seventh made it 14-10.

But Mineral County had last up and they made the most of it. S. Lacovara hit a batter, then walked the next batter. Bryson Wells took over Lacovara, but he walked the first three batters, then gave up an RBI single that tied the game. Then an error in left field to the next batter allowed the winning run to score.

Tony Dominguez got the start for Mineral County. He went five and-a-third innings, allowing 10 runs on nine hits and striking out seven.

M. Lacovara started for the Vandals. He pitched two and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on two hits and struck out three.

Trindle entered the game from the bullpen for Lacovara throwing two and two-thirds innings. Then S. Lacovara came on to try to get the save, but ended up as the losing pitcher.

Eureka outhit the Serpents, 11 hits to six. Wells was 3-for-4 at bat. Hayward and Lopez both had two hits.

The second game was an early defeat for the Vandals as they found themselves behind 16-1 after four innings and that was the final score

Mineral County notched six runs in the second inning. Dominguez, Treven Wachsmuth, Seth Buzzi, and Ethan Nelms had RBIs in the inning.

Ace pitcher Wachsmuth started for the Serpents. He allowed no hits and just one run, struck out 10 and walked one.

Hayward was pitching for Eureka. He surrendered 11 runs on five hits in his three innings, with four strikeouts and two walks.

Wells came on in the bottom of the fourth for the final two-thirds of the inning. He gave up five runs on three hits, struck out one and walked three.

The team is off this week for Spring break. They play host to Round Mountain on April 10, then have a league double-header with Pyramid Lake in Eureka April 13.
