Vandals earn convincing win over McDermitt

The Eureka County boys basketball team have had a bright season to this point, and are 13-3 overall, and 4-1 in league play after dominating McDermitt 68-25 last week.

The Vandals took the floor for the tip at the Fieldhouse in Eureka and took little time to show the Bulldogs they protect home court. They came out scoring a whopping 22 points in the first quarter compared to only four points for McDermitt.

Eureka coach Elmer Porter had the Vandals playing very well on the defensive end against the Bulldogs, especially in the first half. The Vandals took a 38-11 lead into the locker room at halftime before mixing in some reserves for the remainder of the game. Much of the same was to be expected in the second half as Eureka scored 30 more points in the second half compared to only 14 for McDermitt.

The Vandals cruised to the win over the Bulldogs to secure their fourth league win of the season. Senior Forward Nick Gordon led Eureka with 21 points. Jaiden Hicks and Paul Padilla were the only other Vandals in double figures with 11 points each.

The boys will travel to Carlin and Owhyee this Friday and Saturday for a league double header. Eureka has beat both these teams earlier in the league season, but must remained focused on each individual game to continue their quest for a much attainable league title and a number one seed in the regional playoffs. Eureka’s only league loss was against the Wells Leopards in Wells.

If Eureka can win the games they are expected to during the remainder of their league schedule, they will have a chance to take control of the division against Wells who they play at home on Feb. 5. Wells is 5-0 and Eureka is 4-1 in league play. If Eureka can beat Wells in their second meeting they will own the tiebreaker of the league and take the league championship.
