Vandals earn first win of the season at Alamo tourney

April 2, 2016 by Clint Tognotti Leave a Comment

The Eureka County High baseball team traveled south this past weekend to Alamo to start their 2016 season. Led by coach David Hicks, the Vandal team got an abundance of playing time as they played a total of five games over Saturday and Sunday.

Eureka started out the tournament with a close loss to Moapa Valley 5-3, and followed that game with a 12-2 loss against West Wendover. Eureka was still working on its pitching staff and it showed against Pahranagat Valley in their third game as they lost 10-0. The Vandals were able to get base runners against the Panthers, but “couldn’t get them across the plate,” said coach Hicks.

The team was able to pick up its first win of the season in their fourth game of the tournament, as they defeated Beaver Dam 11-0. This was the Vandals best game offensively as they found ways to put the bat on the ball and advance runners, while their defense was on point also.

The Vandals finished their tournament with a 12-1 loss in the 3rd place game against West Wendover.

The season is early, and Eureka will use upcoming tournaments to find their identity for the season. They will travel to Virginia City this weekend for a tournament, followed by a tournament in Las Vegas the following weekend.
