Vandals Earn Split with Wells and Jackpot

The Vandal boys split with Wells and Jackpot on the road last week. Tristan Bircham scored 14 points and Chase Green tallied 12 as the boys beat Wells 46-33.

But the big story of the weekend was C.W. Landry suffering a severe ankle sprain that coach Fred Minoletti said will like sideline him until the playoffs begin in mid-February.

“It was the very first play at Wells.” Minoletti recalled. “He stole the ball, went in for a lay in, but came down on someone’s foot and rolled his ankle pretty bad. Swelled up the size of a grapefruit. We’re somewhat thin as it is with only five regular varsity players and the others float between JV and varsity, so we struggled against the Leopards, but managed to pull out a win.”

Saturday night, at league leading Jackpot, the boys lost 55-18. Only three Vandals scored, Chase Green and Gage Howard with seven each, and Bircham with four. No stats given for Jackpot (11-2, 3-0).

“The kids played hard, we just laid an egg there,” Minoletti said. “We just couldn’t score. They put a lot of pressure on us and we didn’t handle that very well, making a lot of turnovers. They’re a solid team. We just didn’t play very well.”

However, Eureka (10-7, 3-1) is still in second place in the league with the one league loss.

Minoletti said this week he will have to “try to pull everything together and go without C.W.”

Tonight and Saturday the Vandals host league foe McDermitt and then have a pickup game with 2A independent Oasis Academy from Fallon.

Minoletti said tonight’s McDermitt game will be key for the team. “It would help keep us in second place. The Bulldogs (6-12, 3-1) have one kid, Cauy Crutcher, who scores most of their points.” Crutcher is averaging 23 points per game and to date has accounted for 45 three-point shots. Ben Draumidalo and Diego Navarro complement Crutcher, each with an 11-point per game average.

Oasis Academy (1-8) is a new school, in their second year of operation.
