Vandals fall at Virginia City

Eureka put a run on the board in the top of the first inning at Virginia City April 12, but the Muckers put on three in the bottom half of the inning, then five more in the bottom of the second inning, enroute to a 10-2 win over the Vandals.

Eureka’s opening run was a grounder to the second baseman who had to go to first base for the out and let the Clayton Shoda score from third base.

Virginia City scored in the bottom of the first on a single by Wyatt Peretti, a Eureka error and a single by Garrett Hames.

In the second inning, the Muckers got a two-run single by Hames and a two-run homer by Peretti.

Mikey Lacovara was the lead off pitcher for Eureka. He worked just one inning, allowing seven runs on five hits, two strikeouts and two walks. Shoda, Chris Drayton and Gage Hayward each contributed an inning of relief pitching for the Vandals.

Tyler Thompson was the pitcher for the league leading Muckers (5-4, 2-1). He threw a complete game with two runs, four hits, 10 strikeouts and no walks.

Shoda was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Vandals (3-5, 0-2). Peyton Mentaberry and Shoda were both credited with two stolen bases.

The boys had a non-league game with Round Mountain on Tuesday.

A big eight run second inning propelled the Vandals to a 14-2 victory over Round Mountain. Eureka was led by Mikey Lacovara, Wyatt Anderson, Bryon Weeks, David Oram, Chris Drayton and Peyton Mentaberry who each had RBIs in the inning.

Eureka returns to league play this Friday for a double header at Tonopah and a Saturday single game at Wells.

At present, Virginia City and Eureka are 1-2 in the 1A Northern League.

In the 1A South, Pahranagat Valley (21-1) leads followed by Smith Valley (8-0) and defending state champion Indian Springs (10-3-1).

Meanwhile, the Lady Vandals were to have a game last week with White Pine, the defending 2A state champion, but the game was cancelled because of snow. No date set for a possible makeup.

The girl’s next games are this Friday hosting Oasis Academy and Saturday at Wells.
