Vandals fall to 0-3 in league play

Eureka got behind early in their game with Tonopah April 19 and just couldn’t come back as they suffered a 12-2 loss to the Muckers.

Then on Saturday the Vandals were shut out 9-0 by Wells in a league game.

At Tonopah, the Muckers, as reported by Gamechanger.com, scored three runs in the first inning on singles by Brayden Tisue, Kobe Bunker and Damien Butterbredt.

Eureka had more hits in the game, seven to six for Tonopah, but they were severely hurt by 10 errors which allowed five runs to score during the game, whereas Tonopah committed only one error.

Tonopah scored six runs in the third inning with Cesar Dellinger, DJ Eason, Braxton Barker, and Bunker, all contributing with RBIs.

Johnny Schweble took the rubber for Eureka to start the game, going one and two-third innings. He allowed four hits and six runs over two innings. Byron Weeks and Gage Hayward entered in relief.

Weeks gave up six runs on two hits, struck out three and walked four.

Mikey Lacovara went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Vandals in hits. Tisue was 2-for-3 for Tonopah (10-5).

On Saturday, traveling to league leading Wells, the Vandals again saw the game slip away after Wells took an early lead and continued on for a 9-0 shutout.

The Leopards (6-9-1, 1-0) scored two runs in the first inning. One on a single by Beruman and an error which allowed another run to score.

One bright spot for Eureka was a double by Clayton Shoda in the first inning.

Zane Rodriguez pitched Wells to victory. He surrendered zero runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out 11 and walking three.

Shoda pitched a complete game for Eureka. He allowed eight hits and nine runs over six innings, striking out five and walking two.

The Vandals tallied six hits in the game. Shoda and Lacovara each had two hits to lead Eureka.

Wells scattered eight hits in the game. Jackie Beruman and Brett Rodriguez each managed multiple hits for Wells. Rodriguez led Wells with two stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with six stolen bases. Wells didn’t commit a single error in the field. Eureka was again hindered by committing nine errors in the game.

This week, the Vandal (5-11, 0-3) have the first of two back-to-back weekend meetings with the Carlin Railroaders. This Friday in Eureka and May 1 in Carlin.

The boys finish the league season May 3 hosting Wells.

The four-team 1A Northern Division playoffs will be May 10-11 in Virginia City.
