Going 2-2 is not a bad way to start the season. The Eureka Vandals baseball team did that last weekend in Yerington winning one game each day.

The boys opened with the Whittell Warriors and they had trouble keeping up with Whittell in a 12-3 loss Friday morning.

Whitell scored six times in the third inning with RBI hits from Bastion Elkins, Danny Barrientos and Clyde Quillin.

Bryson Wells started on the mound for Eureka. He went two innings, allowing six runs on four hits and striking out six. C.W. Landry came on for one inning of relief work.

Mikey Lacovara led the Vandals with two hits in two times at bat. And the team did not commit an error. Catcher Wyatt Anderson made the most plays with six.

However, Whittell was tearing up the bases with 17 stolen bases. Barrientos led the way with four and Quillin had a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate.

The Vandals bounded back from the loss to Whittell later in the day to record an 8-5 win over Coleville.

Shane Lacovara got the start for Eureka. He went three innings, allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out four.

The Vandals also had seven hits. M. Lacovara and Wells each had two hits.

The boys stole eight bases with Wells getting three on the day.

On Saturday morning, Eureka first faced Big Pine, Calif and took a 6-2 win. Chance Trindel threw three innings, allowed two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out three. Johnny Schweble came on n relief for one inning.

Big Pine scored two in the first, but the Vandals shut them down after that.

Eureka scored four runs in the first inning and two more in the third.

Saturday afternoon, the Vandals met the Smith Valley Bulldogs and surrendered seven runs in the first inning and could not catch up in a 12-4 loss. The teams both hit will, Smith valley with nine and Eureka with five. M. Lacovara and Wells both had two hits in two trips to the plate.

Eureka participates in the Panther Invitational in Alamo Friday and Saturday with Beaver Dam, Wells, and Pahrangat Valley, the two-time defending 1A state champion.

The Lady Vandals begin their season also at the Lady Panther Invitational softball tournament with the White Pine JVs, Wells and Beaver Dam.
