Vandals host 14 schools in track meet

1The Eureka High track team hosted 14 teams on March 27 at their annual meet.

Distance runner Brendan Mears scored two first places in the 800 meter and mile run. Mears edged out Round Mountain’s Ivan Chavez in the 800 with a time of 2:21.766 to Chavez’s 2:21.923. His 1600 meter run came in at 5:15.97.

Junior Trevor Merritt took home a fourth place in the high jump at 5-feet,6-inches, a sixth in the discus with his throw of 96-4 and an eighth place in the shot at 34-7.

Junior Stephen Watts and Errol Porter also placed in their events. Watts took a third in the two-mile at 12:37.54 while Porter placed eighth in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:03.08. Porter also ran the 200 meter. Freshman Joseph Watts rounded out the boys team with finishes in the long jump, shot put and discus.

On the girls side, junior Megan Damele took home three firsts and one second place while freshman Israel Warren followed with a first, second, and third individual placing.

Damele earned her firsts in the long jump with 15-4, 200 meter at 27.99, and 400 meter with a time of 1:05.19. Tonopah’s Kayla Slattery took the first in the 100 meter at 13.21 to Damele’s 13.27.

Warren jumped a personal best of 4-11 in the high jump to take first. She placed second in the 200 with a 29.21 and tied for third in the 100 meter at 13.82.

Sophomore Katie Damele placed first in the mile and second in the 800 meters at 2:48.557. Her time in the mile was a personal best at 6:04 flat.

Senior Nicole Orozco placed fourth in the 400 m and fifth in the 100 meter with times of 1:10.35 and 14.37, respectively.

Sophomore Jiselle Dominquez took home three individual placings: a fourth in the long jump at 13-1, a seventh in the 200 and an eighth in the 100 meter dash at 31.59 and 14.61 respectively.

The girls relay team of Natalia Burton, Dominquez, Kallie Norris, and Warren took home first in the 4×100 relay at 57.77. The 4×200, Nicole Burton, Natalia Burton, Norris, and Orozco, team placed fourth with a time of 2:08.16.
