Vandals off to hot start after blanking Coleville

The Eureka County High football team had its first home game of the 2015 season this past Friday at Crutchley Field against the Coleville Wolves. The Vandals wasted little time lighting up the scoreboard, and blasted the Wolves 62-0.

Coleville brought a very young and undersized team into Eureka, and it showed. Although Eureka coach Fred Minoletti was happy about the final outcome, he did say “It is difficult to measure how well things went when you play a team that is young and down.”

Eureka and their abundance of experienced upper classmen dominated both on offense and especially on defense as they held Coleville to negative 10 rushing yards and only 15 yards through the air. Jaiden Hicks led the Vandals offensively with 95 yards on the ground, three rushing touchdowns and another touchdown through the air.

Nick Hornberger had a solid day rushing also as he had 85 yards and a touchdown.

“We ran the ball well which is encouraging and will be huge for us moving forward,” Minoletti stated.

Eureka simply had their way with Coleville and are off to a quick start to the young season at 2-0. The Vandals will be off this weekend, but will have a solid test when they head to Beatty on Sept. 18.

“We expect Beatty to be tough and it should be a good test for us,” Minoletti said.

The coach and his players want to work on cutting down on penalties which is going to be a focus moving forward.
