Vandals open with four wins at Yerington tourney

An exciting opening to the baseball season for the Eureka boys varsity, four wins over in a JV tournament in Yerington.

Three one-run wins, 6-5 over the Dayton JV; 7-6 over the Lowry JV; 2-1 over Spring Creek JV; and finally a 6-3 count over the Bishop Union (Calif.) JV.

The game with Bishop was the first one. The Broncs scored all their runs in the bottom of the first inning, then were held scoreless thereafter, collecting only two hits.

Eureka coach Kia Davis said, “We got there late and only had 15 minutes before game time and were up and down one-two-three in the first inning.”

Bishop blasted a solo homer and another batter doubled off the left field fence in their time at bat, and Davis was thinking it looked like it was going to be a difficult day. “I changed pitchers to Bryson Wells in the third inning and he held steady.”

The Vandals, meantime pulled themselves together and were scoring at an even steady pace, taking the lead in the third inning as they spread out seven hits for the game while committing only one error.

Josh Garcia led Eureka with two hits in three at bats. The boys were also tearing up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Gaven Denshire was the biggest thief with three steals.

Next they played Spring Creek in the first of their one-run affairs. The runs came early, the Vandals got two in the top of the first and Spring Creek with one run in the second.

Saturday morning the boys did a masterful job holding off the Lowry JV for a 7-6 win. Eureka pushed across six runs in the bottom of the second,

Garcia singled, driving in one run, Bryson singled, driving in one run, Kolton Anderson doubled, driving in two runs, Denshire singled, driving in one run, and Chance Trindle singled, driving in one run.

Lowry rallied for five runs in their half of the third inning, before the fire was finally put out.

Saturday afternoon was a 6-5 win over the Dayton JVs. Eureka got all their runs in the third inning to take a 6-4 lead, and held Dayton to only one more run in the fourth.
