Vandals Return to the Court Today

January 10, 2018 by Dave Maxwell Leave a Comment

This weekend is the beginning of the 1A Northern east league action for both the Eureka boys and girls basketball teams as they host Carlin on Friday and Owyhee on Saturday.

The Vandal boys are 7-6 and the Lady Vandals are 9-3.

The Carlin boys team is only 1-2 on the season and the girls team also has played only three games to date and are winless at this point.

Owyhee (5-1), the defending girls state champions, will be a tough challenge for the Lady Vandals.

Eureka coach Travis Gallagher says, “They don’t have 6-0 Kara Egan who graduated. She was the one who usually initiated the cherry-pick play because she was getting all the rebounds. But they still have Kaylani Smart and Maycee McKinney who will make them a tough team, both run the court well and shoot well. And they will likely do the cherry pick play again, it’s part of their game. McKinney is fast and on a defensive rebound she’ll break down court for the pass. It’ll be interesting to see if my girls are going to be disciplined enough to keep close to her.”

The Owyhee boys team, the league’s No. 2 team in the state tournament last year, is but 2-6 this year, having lost 5 of 6 games including three straight before the Christmas break. The teams split last year’s games while the Lady Vandals won two of three with the Braves last year.
