Vandals sending 5 to state tourney

Five Eureka wrestlers were at the 2A Northern Regionals last weekend in Lovelock and all advanced to the state tournament this weekend in Winnemucca.

Wyatt Anderson placed second at the regionals and the other four, James Filippini, Ivan Pickard, Preston Hubbard and Chris Drayton all took fourth place.

Filippini (126) began the quarterfinals with a pin over Morgan Johnson (Wells), but had a semifinal loss by pin to Logan Gavin (Yerington). He received a bye in the consolation round, then lost the third place match by fall to Colton Wanner (Pershing County).

He will wrestle Jordan Free (Lincoln County) in the first match at state.

At 132-pounds Pickard had a first round bye. He then lost by fall to Juan Guizar (Battle Mountain), but won his consolation semifinal match by fall over Rhiannon Maneilito (Owyhee), then lost the third place match by fall to Andres Christian (Yerington).

His opening match at state will be against Austin Marshall (Lincoln County).

Wyatt Anderson (138) received a first round bye. Won his semifinal match by injury default over Enrique Aguilar (Wells), but lost the first place match 17-4 to Dante Reviglio (Yerington), the defending state champion.

Anderson will face Kevin Lemire (Laughlin) in the first round at the state meet.

Preston Hubbard (152) took a 5-4 decision over Nikita Pavlov (Pershing County) in the quarterfinals, but lost by fall in the semifinals to Lucas Peavey (Wells). In the consolation semifinals, he pinned Dalton Shake (Battle Mountain), but lost the third place match by a 13-7 decision to Sean Gottschalk (Pershing County).

His first match at the state tournament will be against Eric Pickens (White Pine), the defending state champion.

Finally, Chris Drayton (160), had a bye in the first round, but lost by fall to Daegen McClary (Battle Mountain). He had a bye in the consolation semifinal, then lost by fall to Vincent Davis (Yerington) and finished in fourth place.

He will open at state against Vance Kinsey-Day (Tonopah).

The top four in each weight class at both the Northern and Southern regionals advanced to the 2019 NIAA Class(es) 4A, 3A & 2A/1A Nevada State High School Wrestling Championships, presented by the Station Casinos at the Winnemucca Events Center Feb. 8-9, hosted by Lowry High School.

Battle Mountain is the six-time defending 2A state wrestling champion.
