Eureka County High softball catcher Shauna Brown reaches for a ball in a recent game. Brown will lead the Lady Vandals in action this weekend at Mineral County.

Spring break for the Eureka Vandals meant no baseball or softball games last week, but a couple of games are on tap this weekend.

For the boys, it’s a non-league meeting today with Sierra Lutheran in Carson City and Saturday a league affair with Mineral County in Hawthorne.

For the girls, their only games are also at Mineral County.

At the present time, as the boys regroup for the season to continue, they have a record of 3-5 and the double-header at Mineral County will be the first league action of the season.

Only four teams in the 1A baseball north-east league as Independence and Owyhee are not fielding teams.

The Vandals finished second in the league to Wells last season but lost out to Mineral County for the spot in the regional playoffs.

The Serpents have had the Vandals number the last few years, having won the last five since the second meeting in 2015. Before that for a couple of years, Eureka held the upper hand by winning five straight.

Going into the weekend, Wells and Mineral County are both 4-4. Wells is not playing this weekend and play Carlin in Wells April 3.

For the Lady Vandals, their record is 0-4. They have not played since being in the Panther Invitational in Alamo Mar. 16-17.

Mineral County (2-2) has losses to Tonopah and Smith Valley.

The girl’s game history with Mineral County is pretty good, 12-4 since 2010, but they have lost the last two. Before that they had won 10 in a row.

Coach Briana Brown said most of the girls attended the State FFA Conference in Reno. And now, even with a short week of practice, she expects the team will be ready for Mineral County.

“During the preseason our fundamentals have been our focus,” she said. “Even though our scores were rough, they certainly did not indicate how the team played. The girls know they can do better and know what needs to be done.”

Following this week, the Lady Vandals have two games at home, April 10 with Round Mountain and April 13 with Pyramid Lake.

Meanwhile, Wells, the three-time defending league and regional champions, do not have games this weekend and are slated to play Carlin April 3, then travel to 2A power house Pershing County for a non-league double-header April 6.
