Dave Maxwell Vandal pitcher Chance Trindle delivers for Eureka in a recent game.

Two losses for the Eureka Vandals were a bit painful on Friday at the Panther Invitational in Alamo last weekend.

The first game against the Beaver Dam Diamondback saw Beaver Dam blow up a 4-4 tie with a 14-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth inning and propel them to an 18-4 win on only nine hits.

Eureka got things going in the first inning with three runs. An error at third base allowed Bryson Wells to score. Chris Dolan drew a walk and later scored on a fielder’s choice. Then Zach Garcia scored the third run on another fielder’s choice.

Beaver Dam got all three runs back though in the third inning, and both teams scored once in the fourth.

The midnight bell rang in the fourth inning for the Vandals.

The Diamondbacks put up 14 runs on the board sending 16 batters to the plate. They got six hits, six walks, a hit batter, and a three-run triple in the inning.

Chance Trindle started on the mound for Eureka. He gave up all the runs, struck out four, but issued nine walks.

Shane Lacovara and Wells each had one hit for the Vandals.

Also on Friday, Eureka fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 16-2 loss to league rival Wells at the Alamo tournament despite out hitting the Leopards four to one.

The Leopards took the lead in the first inning when Enrique. Aguilar stole home.

Like in the game with Beaver Dam, Eureka suffered giving up a big inning. Wells scored 11 runs in the fourth inning of this game.

The Leopards got only one hit in the game, in the fourth inning. The other scores came by way of six walks, four errors and two hit batters.

Shane Lacovara started for Eureka. He allowed no hits, struck out eight, but also walked eight. Chris Dolan relieved him and had two innings of work, allowing the Leopards only hit and walking six.

Wells was also extremely aggressive on the bases, racking up 19 stolen bags.

On Saturday, the Vandals played two-time defending state champion Pahranagat Valley and lost 19-4.

The Panthers, a heavy hitting team, banged out 20 hits, 17 of them coming against Mikel Lacovara and three more off Carlin Hooper.

Eureka’s three hits came from Wyatt Anderson, Dalton Lopez and C.W. Landry.

Pahranagat put nine runs across the plate in the third inning, after getting five in both the first and second innings.

The other game for the Vandals on Saturday was with Beaver Dam again, and this time Eureka routed the Diamondbacks 25-5, but statistics were not available.

The Eureka boys, like the softball team, are off this week for the State FFA convention, followed by Spring break. Their next game, a doubleheader, opens league play at Mineral County March 31.

For the Eureka track team, they participated in the Spring Creek Invitations last weekend, but no results were reported by the meet director.

The Vandal teams will be at the Mickie Costanzo Memorial Invitational in Wendover, Utah this Friday.
