Wells Captures Lead Early to Defeat Vandals Twice

A home run in the first inning by Juan Berumen provided the spark for league leading Wells to take a 7-4 win over Eureka in their double-header opener last Friday in Wells.

Unfortunately, Eureka lost the game despite out-hitting the Leopards six to three.

“The leg injury to our star player, Bryson Wells at the beginning of the season has really hurt us in the remainder,” said coach Kia Davis.

“We have been short of pitching and had looked to Wells to carry us through. He can play at shortstop, but he can’t really push off his pitching leg like he needs to and can’t run the bases, so when he does get on base, we have to have a pinch runner.”

Davis said he is still going to nominate Wells for MVP in the 1A north east league. “He’s a solid glove at shortstop,” said Davis.

In the first game with the Leopards, C.W. Landry drove in two runs for the Vandals with a double in the first inning for a 2-0 lead.

But Wells countered in the their first inning with Berumen’s three-run inside-the-park home run off Eureka pitcher Shane Lacovara to give Wells the lead and they would not give it up.

They scored three more times in the fifth inning, led by Berumen, Sergio Soriano and Corbin Madison all driving in runs.

Oscar Cesas started for Wells. He went six and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on six hits, but also recorded nine strikeouts and four walks.

Lacovara was the loser for the Vandals. He pitched six innings, gave up seven runs on three hits, struck out five and issued seven walks.

He along with Wyatt Anderson, Carlin Hooper, Mikel Lacovara, Bryson Wells and Landry all had one hit for the Vandals.

In the second game, Wells belted Eureka 17-2.

With the game tied at 2 after one inning, the Leopards scored eight times in the second inning, and seven in the third to end the game after three innings on the 10-run rule.

Wells was 2-for-2.

But the Leopards (8-7, 3-0) got 10 hits off three Vandal pitchers, Landry, Wells and Hayward.

This week the Vandals (4-10, 0-4) have a non-league double-header game with Tonopah (4-11) on Saturday and play host to Wells again on May 1.
