Eureka’s Ashton Sanders battles in the Spring Creek Kiwanis Invitational tournament last week.
Eureka wrestlers participated in the 29-team Spring Creek Kiwanis Invitational tournament last week.

Coach Jeremy Auch said three of his wrestlers lost in the first round of their weight class, won the first round of the consolation round, but then lost in the second round. “We didn’t wrestle very good this time. We really must do better. If any of these boys want to advance I’m going to have to talk with them and tell them as the season nears its end if you want to make the state tournament you are going to have to pick it up.”

A young team, the Vandals consist of two freshmen, a sophomore and a junior.

Ashton Sanders (120) lost first to Nick Traynor of North Valley. In the consolation round he pinned Robert Hiatt of Sparks, then lost to Brock Bader of Yerington.

Wyatt Anderson (132) lost in the first round of the championship bracket by pin to Juan Gutierrez of Wooster and in the consolation took a 1-0 decision over Joey MacDarmid of Spring Creek, but lost a 7-5 decision to Jacob Varner of Spring Creek.

Garrett Todd (152) was beaten first by David Razo of Buhl, Idaho. In the consolation round, he pinned Joshua Boulard of Elko, but next lost in the third period to Colby Bowman of Sparks.

Preston Hubbard (152) was pinned in his first round match by Quint Bell of Lowry, won his next match by injury over Quinlin Jackson of Wells, then was pinned by Dylan Cox of Reno.

This weekend the Vandals compete in the Vaquero Invitational in Fernley. The 2A northern league duals are Jan. 26-27 at a site to be determined. The 2A northern regionals will be Feb. 2-3 at Pershing County High School in Lovelock, and the state championship tournament at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas Feb. 9-10.
