Wrestlers face tough tests at Spring Creek Kiwanis Invitational

January 25, 2019 by Dave Maxwell Leave a Comment

Going into the Spring Creek Kiwanis Invitational Wrestling tournament Jan. 11-12, Eureka coach Jeremy Auch said, “It’ll be a tough tournament because there are a few good teams that come down from Idaho.”

With all teams attending it was a 32-team affair including five from Idaho schools.

None of the Vandals’ five wrestlers placed in the tournament. Sage Borba (113) was 0-2. She first lost to Kade Orr (Buhl), who eventually won the class. He is undefeated on the season, 31-0. Her second loss was to Dominic Jackson (Douglas).

Unfortunately, Eureka coach Jeremy Auch said Borba also broke her collarbone in this match and will be out for the rest of the season.

Ivan Pickard (126) also lost his only two matches, both by fall to Josh Rosario (Churchill County) and Monte Cummins (Owyhee).

James Filippini (126) pinned Jose Guizar (Battle Mountain) in his first match, but lost the next match, by fall late in the third period, to Victor Martiez (Reno).

In the consolation round he pinned Josh Bass (Reno), but then lost by fall to Mason Metcalf (Twin Falls).

At 138 pounds, Wyatt Anderson also did not do as well as he had hoped. He lost both his matches, one by fall to Sebastian Greco (Minico, ID), and then an 8-6 decision to Arden Layfield (Reno).

Preston Hubbard (160) went 2-2 at the tournament for Eureka. He had a bye in the first round, but lost to Tyler Green (Sparks) on a technical fall. Hubbard won his match in the consolation round on an 11-9 decision over Kaiden Cervantes (Elko), but then lost by fall to Brett Ferraro (Lowry).

This weekend, Friday and Saturday, the Vandals will be at the Vaquero Invitational in Fernley.

Looking ahead at the rest of January, the league duals are Jan. 25-26 at a site yet to be determined.
