Eureka had to go up against five-time defending 2A state champion Battle Mountain in the first dual of the 2A Northern Duals last week at Battle Mountain. “They just plain skunked us,” said Eureka coach Jeremy Auch. “They filled every weight class except one.”

Ashton Sanders (120) was 6-2 at the duals Auch said, and will be seeded No. 3 at the Northern regionals this Saturday in Lovelock. But Auch said, “There are really only five kids in his weight class in the 2A North.”

Wyatt Anderson (132) was also 6-2 and will be the No. 3 seed as well. Chris Dolan (145) had a 5-3 record at the duals for the No. 4 spot. Preston Hubbard (152) was 5-3 and will also be a No. 4 seed.

Garrett Todd was sick for the Vandals and did not participate.

The top four finishers in the North region in each weight will advance to the state 2A meet Feb. 9 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

“Our kids were just overwhelmed against Battle Mountain,” said Auch. “We didn’t score any points and lost 78-0. It could have been 84-0, but Battle Mountain doesn’t have anyone at 138-pounds, and we don’t either so nobody got any points.”

In the second dual against Pershing County, Chris Dolan did win his match to make the score 74-6.

The Vandals had a 24-6 win over Excel Christian, then tied their next three duals with Incline, Independence and Wells

In the final dual, Eureka lost to Yerington 48-12, but Sanders and Anderson won their matches.

Auch said he does not know what to expect from the regional matches today, “Someone might surprise us all.”

He said Ashton Sanders has improved greatly the past couple of tournaments. “There is ability there and a little bit of good ol’ Nordic luck tossed in for good measure.”
