Despite scoring four runs in the first inning at Carlin on Tuesday, April 28, the Eureka County High School softball team couldn’t score at the Railroaders’ pace. The Lady Vandals led 4-2 after one but trailed 6-5 after two innings of play. It was a new game at 7-7 after three innings of play, and Eureka pushed its advantage to 9-7 through four, but a nine-run fifth inning for the Railroaders put the game out of reach.
ECHS freshman Avery Berg struggled in the circle, going 4.1 innings and allowing 16 earned runs on 21 hits and two walks while striking out six. She didn’t struggle at the dish, though, going 4-for-4 with a triple, four RBI and two runs scored. Classmate Charlee Sestanovich was 3-for-4 with two runs driven in.
Junior Trinity Hudson was a homer shy of hitting for the cycle, scoring three runs and driving in one. Classmate Mya Tognotti went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored, and sophomore Charleigh Osmotherly-Schmid had two singles, a run and an RBI.
The Lady Vandals finished the season amassing 20 hits in their final game, but offense was seldom the problem in this one-win season. Eureka’s 116 runs scored was just three runs below the national average, according to MaxPreps.
The pitching staff posted an earned run average of 14.95 – more than twice the national average – with 239 runs against and 114 walks allowed. The bulk of the innings went to freshmen, however. Berg pitched nearly 40 innings and allowed 79 earned runs. Classmate Holly Sullivan allowed 22 earned runs in 13.1 innings pitched. Both should be better for this first year of pitching experience, and the defense behind them should only improve next year.
“I’m so proud of the girls. Our goal was to get past the third inning, and we did that, and we even made it to the seventh inning in most games. We’re getting smarter on the field with the knowledge of the sport, and they understand how to move their bodies on the field…We’re a very young team, and I can’t wait for what the future holds for the Lady Vandals,” said ECHS head coach Lindsay Stith. “Thanks to everyone who supported us this season and to the other teams in the league that gave us many challenges for us to work on.”
