The May 30 debate at the Eureka Opera House between District 2 County Commission candidates Rich McKay and Steel Raine has been canceled, effective Thursday, April 30, by organizer Marilyn Strickland-Adams. Not only has the debate been canceled, but the race appears to be over, as Commission Chairman Rich McKay has apparently withdrawn his candidacy, effectively delivering the commission seat to Raine.
Word of McKay’s decision to withdraw from the race began circulating on Wednesday, April 29, and on Thursday, April 30, Strickland-Adams, after posting the debate’s cancellation on Facebook, told the Sentinel that McKay “confirmed with me that he is dropping out” and “is waiting on the state to approve his resignation.” Strickland-Adams added that the chairman is “going to finish out his year, of course.”
The Sentinel has been unable to reach McKay for comment.
Raine, reached by phone April 30, said, “All I really know is that he said that he’s dropping out of the election. As to why or what, I don’t really know.”
Strickland-Adams said, “He’s [McKay’s] got a lot on his plate with his ranch, and his daughter only has two more years until she graduates, so he plans to kind of retire and just do the ranch.”
As of Wednesday, April 29, the Eureka County Clerk had not received any updated filing from McKay.
