Lady Vandals third, boys fourth at Battle Mountain Twilight track meet

Eureka County High School junior Brooke Watts won the long jump and triple jump, and sophomore Anna McKay was posted her best time of the season to take second in the 100-meter hurdles and was third in the high jump, leading the Lady Vandals to a third-place finish at the Battle Mountain Twilight Invite on Thursday, April 30.

Sophomore Reagan Mello was third in the triple jump, fourth in the long jump, and eighth in both the discus and shot put. Freshman Melissa Johnson took fourth in the triple jump. 

While the Lady Vandals didn’t set any personal records, it’s not uncommon in the week prior to regionals for track and field athletes to back off the throttle a bit to stay healthy.

The boys did get personal bests from Rylan Pritchett in the discus and shot put. His 99-foot discus throw was good for seventh place, and he was 11th with a shot put throw of 31 feet, 3.5 inches. Fellow junior Liam Sullivan had a personal best discus throw of 105.75 feet to place seventh, and classmate Russell Rowley was sixth.

ECHS senior Joseph Minoletti was the top finisher for the fourth-place Vandals. He was second in the high jump. Junior Aliikoa Mcinnis-Lemn ran his best 100-meter dash of the season, finishing in 12.56 seconds to take 11th place.

The Vandal track and field teams are at Reno High School for the Northern 1A Finals, May 8-9. The top-ranked Vandals amongst 1A competitors are Nathan Tudor in the 400 meters, Rowley in the mile and two-mile, Alexander McKay in the hurdles, Minoletti in the high jump, and Sullivan in the shot put. The boys also have two top-five, 1A relay teams. 

The top-ranked Lady Vandals are Sophie Hassell in the 100- and 200-meter dash, Watts in the 400, 300 hurdles, long jump and triple jump, McKay in both hurdle events, and Johnson in the mile and two-mile. The girls have three top-five, 1A relay teams.
