Eureka track and field teams second at Northern 1A Regionals

Eureka County High School junior Brooke Watts and senior Joseph Minoletti led the Vandal track and field teams to second-place finishes at the Northern 1A Regionals in Reno, May 8-9.

Watts won the triple jump and posted a personal record in the 300-meter hurdles of 48.34 seconds to take the gold. She was also second in the 400 meters and the long jump.

The Lady Vandals also saw sophomore Anna McKay become a regional champion in the 800 meters. She was third in both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles, running a personal best of 17.79 seconds in the 100-meter event. McKay also took the silver in the high jump with a personal best leap of four feet, seven inches.

Other podiums by the Lady Vandals included sophomore Reagan Mello’s third-place finish in the long jump and triple jump, and freshman Melissa Johnson’s second-place finish in the mile and third-place finish in the 3,200 meters. The 4×400-meter relay team of Johnson, sophomores Claudia Covarrubias and Sophia Dickover, and senior Julia Minoletti also took the silver.

The boys’ 4×200-meter relay team of Preston Auch, Alexander McKay, Nathan Tudor, and Joseph Minoletti took gold. Minoletti also won the high jump and placed fifth in the 800 with a personal record time of 2:09.36. Auch took third in the 200 meters, and Tudor was fourth in the 400 meters. McKay took second in the 110-meter hurdles and third in the 300-meter hurdles. 

“They all performed really well. Every athlete PR’d in at least one of their events,” informed ECHS head coach Gio Minoletti. “Anything can happen at state so our goal is to stay focused and give maximum effort at state.”

The State Track and Field Championships will be held at Hug High School in Sparks, May 15-16. The top three placers in each regional event automatically advance to state.
