Eureka County High School junior Brooke Watts won individual championships in three of her four events at the Nevada 1A State Track and Field Championships in Sparks, May 15-16, leading the Lady Vandals to a second-place finish behind Wells and ahead of Sage Ridge.
Watts had personal bests in the long jump (15’ 9.25”), the 300-meter hurdles (47.2 seconds) and triple jump (33’ 7.5”) to take gold in each event. She was second in the 400 meters with a personal best time of 1:01.56.
“Yeah, that’s an accomplishment for sure,” ECHS head coach Gio Minoletti said of Watts’ triple title performance. “She also broke the school record in the 400 meters…The old record was set in 2015 at 1:01.91.”
The Lady Vandals had another individual champion in sophomore Anna McKay, who won the 800-meter race running a season best 2:34.06. She was second behind Watts in the 300-meter hurdles, fourth in the 100-meter hurdles and third in the high jump.
Freshman Melissa Johnson continued to impress, setting a personal record of 13:08.41 in the 3,200-meter race to take the silver. She was also third in the mile, sixth in the 800 and part of the third-place 4×400-meter relay team along with senior Julia Minoletti and sophomores Claudia Covarrubias and Sophia Dickover. Dickover was also fourth in the two-mile race with a personal best time of 14:16.12.
Sophomore Reagan Mello was third in the triple jump with a personal record leap of over 31 feet, and also had a personal best discus throw of 85.75 feet to place fifth.
“I’ll have my girls team back with a strong freshman class next year, so I’m very optimistic on another successful year,” Coach Minoletti said.
The Eureka boys’ 4×200-meter relay team of Preston Auch, Alexander McKay, Nathan Tudor and Joseph Minoletti took second to lead the Vandals to a third-place finish behind the champions from Spring Mountain and runners-up from Mineral County.
Alexander McKay had third- and fourth-place finishes in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, respectively. Junior Aliikoa Mcinnis-Lemn was right behind him in both races.
Junior Russell Rowley was third in the mile and fourth in the two-mile race, with sophomore Lian Allred taking the bronze in the 3,200 meters and fourth-place in the 1,600 meters. Rowley was also fifth in the discus, finishing two spots ahead of classmate Liam Sullivan, who was fifth in the shot put.
Joseph Minoletti finished fourth in the high jump and sixth in both the 800- and 400-meter races in his final high school track meet.
“I’m losing four seniors who are great leaders that will be hard to replace: Alex McKay, Nate Tudor, Julia Minoletti and Joseph Minoletti. They brought a level of maturity and talent that will be missed,” Coach Minoletti said. “The boys team should do well again, with another strong senior class taking the lead with a lot of young talent coming up.”
