Former Sheriff Jesse Watts suspends Congressional campaign; endorses James Settelmeyer

Former Eureka County Sheriff Jesse Watts announced on Facebook, May 29, that he would be suspending his campaign for Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District and will endorse James Settelmeyer. The post read:

“Today, after careful consideration and countless conversations with supporters across Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District, I am announcing the suspension of my campaign for Congress.

When I entered this race, I did so for one reason: to fight for the people of Northern Nevada. I wasn’t interested in political games, insider deals, or climbing the political ladder.

I stepped forward because I believe our communities deserve a representative who understands our way of life and the challenges facing working families, law enforcement officers, ranchers, small business owners, and rural communities.

From my very first interview, I made it clear that I was willing to challenge the status quo—even if that meant running against a candidate who carried President Trump’s endorsement. I believed then, and I believe now, that every candidate should earn the support of the people they seek to represent.

However, politics is also about reality and strategy.

With a crowded field dividing conservative voters, it has become clear that mounting a successful challenge requires more than conviction. It requires a broad political coalition, significant financial resources, and legislative experience.

As I evaluated the landscape and considered what is best for Northern Nevada, I reached the conclusion that continuing this campaign would only further divide voters who share our commitment to limited government, individual freedom, and strong local communities.

After careful consideration, I am endorsing James Settelmeyer for Congress and encourage my supporters to unite behind his campaign.

James has spent years serving Northern Nevada. He understands our communities, our priorities, and our way of life. He has the legislative experience, the relationships, and the credibility necessary to effectively represent Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District in Washington, D.C.

I cannot support a candidate for Congress who does not genuinely represent Northern Nevada. Our district deserves a representative rooted in our communities and committed to protecting our way of life.

To everyone who supported this campaign, volunteered, donated, encouraged me, and stood alongside me: thank you. Your belief in this mission has been humbling and inspiring. While this campaign may be ending, my commitment to serving Nevada and fighting for the principles we share remains as strong as ever.

If you have not yet cast your ballot, I encourage you to take a serious look at James Settelmeyer and what he brings to this race.

Northern Nevada deserves strong representation, proven leadership, and a voice that will fight for our communities, our freedoms, and our way of life.

An effort to recall Watts as Sheriff was initiated on July 22, 2024, when he was accused of making false claims against a local resident for allegedly assaulting a former Eureka resident in 2019. Watts resigned Nov. 1, 2024. Watts then brought a lawsuit against the county alleging improper, retaliatory investigations forcing his retirement. That lawsuit was dismissed on May 20, 2026.
