Looking ahead to 4th of July celebration

The Eureka Volunteer Fire Department announced the schedule and lineup for the upcoming Fourth of July celebration. The community-wide Independence Day festivities will feature a morning parade, an afternoon of competitive street events and a traditional evening fireworks display.

Parade registration and details

The celebration begins with the annual parade, which offers free entry to all community participants. Parade registration opens at 9 a.m. in front of the Eureka Volunteer Fire Department, and the procession is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.. Fireman Robb Holloway will announce the parade from his station in front of the Eureka Courthouse. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three entries across six distinct categories. The Best Float category offers prizes of $100 for first place, $75 for second and $50 for third. The Best 4-Wheeler category awards $60, $40 and $20, while the Best Child Float awards $50, $40 and $30. The categories for Best Decorated Bicycle, Best Dressed Cowpoke and Best Groomed Pet each offer payouts of $15 for first place, $10 for second and $5 for third.

Athletic and street competitions

Immediately following the parade, the community street events are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. These events feature a variety of races categorized by age group and gender. The boys’ and girls’ foot races, sack races and three-legged races are divided into brackets for ages 2-4, 5-7, 8-11, 12-14, 15-18 and 18 and over. These standard races, along with the couple sack race, offer cash prizes of $5 for first place, $3 for second and $2 for third. The boys’ and girls’ shoe races follow the same $5, $3 and $2 prize structure for the 5-7, 8-11 and 12-14 age divisions. Additionally, children aged 2 to 12 can participate in a nickel scramble, which is organized into separate boys’ and girls’ divisions across four age brackets.

Specialty events and fireworks finale

The schedule also includes several specialty competitions designed for both youth and adult participants. The youth pop-drinking contests for boys and girls award the standard $5, $3 and $2 prizes. The ladies’ and men’s nail-driving competitions feature increased stakes, awarding $15 for first place, $10 for second and $5 for third. The adult divisions culminate with the ladies’ and men’s beer-drinking contests, which both feature a jackpot prize, and the adult egg toss, which offers the largest payout of the day at $100 for first place, $25 for second and $15 for third. The day’s events will conclude at 9 p.m. with a fireworks display launched by the Eureka Volunteer Fire Department from the ridgetop located north of Eureka High School.
