Open burning closed, effective June 10

June 9, 2026 by Eureka Sentinel

Eureka County will close all controlled burning effective 12:01 a.m., June 10, 2026. This closure includes yard trimmings, limbs, brush and burn barrels within Eureka County. In addition to the above restrictions, the Eureka County Fire Protection District wishes to remind outdoor enthusiasts of active restrictions on public lands now in effect by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service. This includes but may not be limited to the following:

  1. Discharging, using or allowing the use of fireworks, pyrotechnic or incendiary devices.
  2. Discharging, igniting or causing to burn explosives or explosive material, including binary explosive targets.
  3. Discharging a firearm using tracer or incendiary ammunition.
  4. Operating or using any internal or external combustion engine without having a spark-arresting device properly installed, maintained and in effective working order.

Citizens are reminded that they may be held liable for suppression costs and/or damages related to an escaped burn.

Lack of precipitation, afternoon winds and extremely high temperatures have caused vegetation throughout Eureka County to become highly combustible. Portions of Eureka County have an abundance of dry fuel this year compared to previous years. The lack of precipitation and combination of wind in the last two weeks has dried these fuels, requiring the closure of open burning of yard materials and the use of burn barrels.

Eureka County will monitor conditions, and further restrictions may be implemented during the summer including full restrictions with state and federal partners on public lands throughout the county.

Please remember to have adequate defensible space of 30 or more feet around your homes and outbuildings. Some helpful tips for clearing defensible space include lightly watering the area the night prior to mowing and using string trimmers with nylon twine instead of metal blades. More tips can be found at https://www.livingwithfire.com. Use caution traveling on and off road in Eureka County, carry water, a shovel and call 911 or 775-237-5330 to report a fire. Information on fire restrictions managed by Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service in Nevada can be found at https://www.nevadafireinfo.org/restrictions-and-closures.

Please have a safe and enjoyable summer.
