Eureka County Commission Chairman Rich McKay won re-election over challenger Steel Raine, 74.88% to 25.12%.
Though McKay withdrew from actively campaigning for re-election, his name remained on the ballot, as the deadline to officially withdraw through the Secretary of State had passed. When asked what he would do late last month if he were re-elected anyway, McKay indicated he would discuss it with his family and “make a decision whether to serve or to resign and have the governor appoint a replacement.”
Following the election, McKay told the Sentinel that he was “surprised at the result” but did not provide any announcement regarding his plans.
“My intention was always to serve out my term, and I will reevaluate at the end of the year,” McKay said.
If McKay decides not to assume office in January, the governor will be responsible for filling the vacancy.
