The Eureka County School District Board of Trustees met at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11 with all board members present, including Lynn Conley, Melinda Filippini, Hallee DeChambeau, Dillon Pollock and Doug Dickover. District leadership in attendance included Superintendent Tate Else and High School Principal John Glover, while newly appointed elementary principal Steve Sullivan was absent due to a health challenge.
School facility prep and fall athletics kickoff
During administrator reports, Principal Glover extended gratitude to Director of Maintenance and Facilities Doren Adams and his crew for preparing district facilities for the upcoming school year.
“The school is looking great; ready for our opener on Monday,” Glover told the board. “If you haven’t seen the floor in the back, it was taken down to bare wood and repainted, and it looks phenomenal.”
Teachers returned to work on Tuesday, Aug. 11, for administrative prep and participated in a Kagan professional development training on Wednesday, Aug. 12. Community open houses were scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 13, with Eureka Elementary hosting families from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Eureka High School holding its event from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
High school athletic activities are already underway across the district. The girls’ volleyball team opened its season at a tournament in Yerington, while the football team traveled to Carlin for a scrimmage ahead of its official home opener against McDermitt on Aug. 21. In addition, the Eureka High School Rodeo was hosted over the weekend.
Elementary updates and district administrative training
Else delivered updates on elementary operations across the district. Else reported attending a community potluck and National Night Out in Crescent Valley, noting that school facilities in the northern part of the county are fully prepared for opening day.
The superintendent also highlighted recent professional development initiatives for administrative staff, including a Microsoft training session focused on artificial intelligence tools. Else noted that administrators created custom AI agents during the session and were scheduled to complete the second portion of the workshop later in the week.
Board actions, FFA travel and policy revisions
Trustees took formal action on a broad slate of agenda items. The board approved out-of-state travel for Eureka FFA members to attend the 2026 National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, from October 19 to October 23, with an estimated cost of $17,500 funded through the general fund. Trustees also voted to waive printing costs for High School Rodeo programs and day sheets, approved revisions to the August 2026 testing manual and procedures and adopted updated student, parent and staff handbooks for the 2026–2027 school year.
The board conducted first readings for several updated district policies, including Policy 4112 on employee bullying and cyberbullying, Policy 4113 AR on the prevention of sexual misconduct and Policy 4114 prohibiting workplace violence. Trustees also reviewed first readings for Policy 4116.3 concerning classified employee transfers (eliminating 4116.9 AR), Policy 4117 on employee evaluations and Policy 4117 AR.
To close out official business, the board approved a resolution adopting the biennial 2027 iNVEST document produced by superintendents representing Nevada’s 17 elected school boards. Trustees completed the meeting by ratifying recent budget transfers, minutes from the July 1 meeting, personnel changes, payroll accounts payable warrants and electronic purchase card transfers.
