The Crescent Valley Town Advisory Board met on Aug. 18, 2026, to review public safety facility assessments, regional fire response efforts and a regional housing shortage that has pushed local law enforcement staffing to critical levels.

Emergency facility planning and fire response

Public Works Director Jeb Rowley reported via telelink that building assessments are queued for a proposed combined emergency services facility in Crescent Valley. The initial assessment will determine the scale and feasibility of housing a sheriff substation, fire station and EMS bay under one roof before remaining annual assessment funds are exhausted. Rowley also highlighted heavy summer fire activity across the region, noting that self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) units were recently distributed to the Beowawe and Diamond Valley fire stations, with air bottle refills scheduled to take place at the Crescent Valley station. Rowley commended emergency personnel for their multi-agency response to a major hay barn fire in Eureka over the weekend.

Sheriff warns of critical law enforcement staffing levels

Eureka County Sheriff Miles Umina updated the board on severe recruitment challenges, warning that law enforcement staffing for patrol and jail operations in Eureka has reached “critical levels.” Umina emphasized that while placing staff in Crescent Valley remains manageable, a total lack of permanent housing in Eureka is hindering recruitment, as prospective deputies with families cannot find suitable accommodations. He noted that local RV parks are full and temporary man camps fail to provide long-term living solutions, forcing existing deputies to work grueling shift rotations.

Federal outreach and potential housing solutions

To address the infrastructure and housing shortfall, Umina announced that Natural Resource Manager Jake Tibbitts organized an upcoming Friday meeting with U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen to detail Eureka County’s urgent needs. In response to the housing dilemma, Vice Chair Jeremy Rice suggested contacting Nevada Gold Mines to explore utilizing two unused double-wide trailers situated on large lots in Crescent Valley to house incoming public safety personnel.
