Vandal VB falls to Lund before packed weekend

The Lund High School volleyball team picked up its 11th win of the season at Eureka on Thursday, Sept. 3, 25-19, 25-22, 25-13. It was the first league match of the season for both teams. 

LHS senior Tessa Hooley finished a third of her kill attempts to finish with 10 on the night. She also had two blocks and 12 digs. Lund junior Genevieve Carter added three aces and 13 digs, and classmate Madi Carter delivered 22 assists. The Lady Mustangs had just three serve receive errors in 40 attempts.

Meanwhile, the Lady Vandals struggled to get into offensive sets, killing just over 20% of their attempts. Sophomore Melissa Johnson had the most scoring success, with nine kills and a 32.1% kill rate. 

While Eureka put 90% of its serves in play, only four were aces. The Lady Vandals were put on the defensive by Lund, recording 61 digs to stay in points with the Lady Mustangs. Eureka also had nine serve return errors in 41 attempts.

Eureka head coach Erin Vial said that the junior varsity team got a win over Lund, and that the varsity team played pretty well overall. “We had some things to work on this week and a short two days of practice before our three games this weekend. We are hoping for some wins in the books this weekend.”

The Lady Vandals (4-8, 0-1) visit the winless Carlin Roadrunners (0-11, 0-2) for their second league match of the season at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10. Tonopah visits Eureka at noon the next day, and Owyhee (7-4, 0-0) visits at the same time on Saturday, Sept. 12.
