The Eureka County High School girls volleyball team got its second league win of the season over McDermitt in Eureka on Friday, Sept. 18. While the set scores were close, the Lady Vandals swept all three sets, 25-18, 25-22, 25-21.
The offense came from everywhere and everyone from Eureka, as four hitters had at least five kills. Senior Brooke Watts served up five aces, and junior Reagan Mello added four. Senior Jazmine Martinez led the Lady Vandals with 15 digs, and junior Anna McKay delivered 19 assists. ECHS returned 85% of serves and killed 32% of its attempts.
“Our offense is looking a lot better. We’ve made a few changes in the last couple of weeks. The players are adjusting, but the team is becoming much more confident,” said ECHS head coach Erin Vial. “Our serves also improved this weekend, but we still have some room for improvement.”
The Lady Vandals are fourth in the Eastern 1A with a 2-2 record, and their next match against Wells (6-7, 2-0) at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24 will be pivotal.
“Wells looks to have a similar record to us, and they have lost to some of the same teams and beat some of the same teams as us. It should be a competitive match up,” Vial said. “It will come down to mental toughness and the Lady Vandals can absolutely get the win if we keep our heads in it and stay confident.”
It’s homecoming week at ECHS, and the volleyball team is especially busy, with three games in three days, including road games at Round Mountain on Friday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. and at Lund at noon the following Saturday. Lund beat Eureka 3-0 in their first meeting this season.
“[W]e are hoping to meet them much more aggressively than we did in the last game,” Vial said.
